PT and saving money

By Robert Lammers

Can you actually save your self some money by going to physical therapy (PT)? It seems impossible in a time when insurances are greatly reducing their cost (and coverage) and shifting more and more of the financial burden on to you, the patient. You may have noticed over the years co-payments and co-insurance has gradually crept up. Every time you go to any kind of medical appointment you have to pay something out of pocket. Most of us just roll with the punches thinking there is nothing we can do and there is no other choice.  Or is there?

You might find yourself in a position where you are headed towards surgery. This usually means multiple doctors visits, hospitalization, time missed of from work, possible renting medical equipment—this can add up quickly and make a huge total. What if you were a good candidate for PT and you received any for your particular problem? We see this almost daily. Patients who don’t require surgical intervention at all or other costly treatments. A course of PT can be completed without missing lengthy periods of work; without having to pay the hospital, anesthesiologist, surgeon, pharmacy, medical goods supply store, etc.

Of course there is some cost attached to receiving physical therapy, but when you look at it compared to the cost of surgery or the long-term costs of not fixing a problem correctly, the cost pf PT is much lower.
